Day 1 | Colombo to Sigiriya
Welcome to Sri Lanka! Your family adventure begins with a journey from Colombo north to Sigiriya. Along the way, accustom yourself to the exotic sights and tastes of Sri lanka by sampling fresh pineapples or barbeque corn. As we pass roadside forests, you may spot playful apes in their natural habitat, so keep an eye out! We keep things simple on your first day, so take the rest of the afternoon to relax at your hotel and enjoy the views of Sigiriya Rock.
Day 2 | Explore Anuradhapura
Today’s adventure takes you a short way north to Anuradhapura. Another one of Sri Lanka’s stunning UNESCO world-heritage sites, Anuradhapura is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. These ancient ruins and temples offer a vibrant taste of the past as the site is still used for ceremonies and festivities. You’ll also have time to explore the sprawling modern-day township of Anuradhapura with its markets and museum.
Day 3 | Sigiriya & traditional lunch
Get ready for a day of action. We wake early to beat the heat and crowds to climb the impressive system of stairs to the plateau summit of Sigiriya Rock. Soak in the majesty of this impressive natural structure that was once the epicentre of the ancient Kassapa civilisation. Explore the remnants of King Kasyapa's Palace or enjoy the lush green ancient royal gardens below. Next, enjoy a rowboat trip on Sigiriya's peaceful, secret lake famous for its abundance of birdlife. Time for lunch and a taste of the vibrant flavours at a traditional Sri Lankan restaurant overlooking the rice fields. Make sure you fill up as we’re heading on safari after lunch.
Day 4 | Dambulla Caves & Kandy
We travel from Sigiriya to Kandy via the Dambulla cave temples, one of Sri Lanka’s most spectacular historical sites. Marvel at the intricate murals and statues carved within the rock temples. You’re likely to meet some local apes along the way, they are often found along the track leading up to the temple. Enjoy an afternoon at leisure in Kandy. Our favourite things to do in Kandy are a traditional Sri Lankan dance show and an evening visit to the famed Temple of the Tooth.
Day 5 | Kandy Gardens & Village Tour
A full day to explore Sri Lanka’s cultural capital, Kandy. With the tranquil Bogambara Lake in the centre of town and lush hills and tea plantations flanking it, Kandy is a perfect photo opportunity. We’ll get off the beaten track with a guided walk through a traditional farming village and enjoy a delicious lunch with a local family. Options for the afternoon include a stroll through Sri Lanka’s largest gardens, the Peradeniya Botanic Gardens, home to thousands of fruit bats; a local cooking class; or simply explore the colourful city of Kandy.
Day 6 | Kandy to Nuwara Eliya
We depart Kandy and travel through the lush countryside and into the cooler mountainous tea-growing region of Nuwara Eliya. Along the way, we’ll stop at a viewing platform overlooking the productive tea plantations below as well as the picturesque Ramboda Waterfall. Spend the afternoon walking amongst the tea plantations and exploring Nuwara Eliya, a hillside township often referred to as Little England thanks to the influence of its English tea pioneers.
Day 7 | Train to Ella
All aboard! Today you travel by slow train to Ella through some of the most captivating highland scenery in Sri Lanka. Whether the day brings sunny skies or misty mountain landscapes, this amazing scenic journey through tunnels and picturesque villages will delight. Your driver will transfer your luggage to Ella for your arrival that afternoon.
Day 8 | Trip Title
Ella is a small town that’s big on outdoor adventures. Today, you’ll get outside and get active with your choice of adventure. Take a gentle hike through tea plantations as you ascend Little Adam’s Peak for impressive views. Or take a Tuk Tuk to the remote Diyaluma Falls, a favourite spot for locals. If you’re up for a challenge, take the 2-hour hike up Ella Rock, it’s well worth the effort. Or if you’d prefer to keep things less strenuous, take the day to relax in the beautiful township of Ella. The choice is yours.
Day 9 | Ella to Liptons Seat
Today is all about tea! Start the day with a journey to Lipton’s Seat in Haptule, the original home of one of the biggest names in tea. Today, Lipton’s Seat is considered one of Sri Lanka's most impressive viewpoints and offers expansive views over an endless vista of rolling green hills and tea plantations. Immerse yourself in Sri Lanka’s biggest export with a tour through a tea factory before meeting the ladies who pick the tea leaves. After all of this exploring and learning, it’s time to sit down and relax with a hot cup of tea!
Day 10 | Ella to Udawalawe
We take a Tuk Tuk ride to the world-famous Demodara Nine Arches Bridge just outside of Ella. Watch the train that you took the day before as it ambles over this stunning arched bridge, which is as famous for being a feat of engineering as it is for its beauty. Big kids and little kids alike will enjoy a play with echoes in the train tunnel. This evening, things get wild as we enter Udawalawe National Park and set up in the glamping tents. Keep your eyes peeled for some very big local wildlife.
Day 11 | Udawalawe to Mirissa
Today will be a very special day, so we recommend you start things off with a swim at your accommodation. We then head to the Udawalawe Elephant Transit home. This amazing facility rehabilitates orphaned and injured elephants until they are ready to look after themselves back in the wild. No trip to Sri Lanka is complete without a close encounter with an elephant. After this incredible experience, we journey to Mirissa for some serious beach time. The sunset over pristine Mirissa Beach is not to be missed.
Day 12 | Mirissa
A real-life tropical paradise, Mirissa Beach offers palm-fringed sandy shores, breathtaking sunsets, amazing local seafood and the perfect place to chill out. You may want to make the most of the watersports on offer, or you may want to get away from things with a visit to a quieter local beach nearby or snorkel at a special beach often frequented by turtles.
Day 13 | Mirissa
We’ll spend another day at Mirissa Beach, soaking up as much beach time in one of the best beaches on the planet. Choose to explore the local area and its shopping or get out on the water for a whale watching expedition or surfing at Weligama Beach.
Day 14 | Mirissa to Galle
Enjoy a morning of leisure in Mirissa (perhaps catch a last wave) before departing for the old town of Galle. Along the way, we’ll stop to watch the stilt fisherman as they fish the traditional way perched over the water on seats made from sticks & twine. In Galle, you’ll visit the local turtle hatchery for a chance to get up close and personal with some adorable little locals. Discover everything you need to know about sea turtles and the important conservation work being done in this area to protect them. Relax with a leisurely evening in Galle.
Day 15 | Galle Fort
Today, you have all day to explore the fortified city of Galle. This fascinating city offers a unique mix of European architecture and South-Asian traditions set amongst an eclectic display of mosques, churches, museums and markets. At the heart of the city is the UNESCO world-heritage listed Galle Fort. Surrounded by the sea on three sides, this walled enclave is one of Sri Lanka’s most impressive sights.
Day 16 | Galle to Colombo
It’s nearly time to say goodbye, and today we take the scenic journey from Galle to Colombo. You may be enjoying more time in Colombo, or if it’s time to head home, we will arrange your transfer to the airport.
